A pacing board is a versatile and simple tool used by speech-therapists. All you need is to draw circles in a row on a sheet of paper, or download our pacing board. Each circle or picture is used to represent a letter, syllable, or word.
This simple tool provides a visual presentation of sounds or words to help to:
· Break up syllables to articulate all the syllables in longer words.
· Expand sentences by using simple sentences like “ I want the____”.
· Slow down speech by having the child say one word at a time as they point to each picture
How to use it:
The goal is to model the activity to the child and gradually decrease assistance into independence. This can be accomplished by using the following steps:
1. Model the activity: point to each picture and say the target sounds/words.
2. Point and say it together with the child.
3. Point with the child but have the child say the target sounds/words.
4. The child uses the pacing board independently
The next steps are for the child to use the pace board without pointing and eventually produce the activity without the pacing board present.
The best tools are the simplest ones!
